New York Times and USA Today best-selling author Cynthia Eden invites readers to a dark paranormal world...

Vampires exist. So do werewolves. The creatures that you fear in the darkness? They’re all real. And the baddest of the paranormals…those who love to hurt humans…they’re sent to Purgatory, the only paranormal prison in the U.S.

Deadly forces are at work within Purgatory. The monsters are joining together—and their plans have to be stopped. FBI Agent Shane August, a very powerful vampire with a dark past, is sent into the prison on an undercover assignment. His job is to infiltrate the vampire clan, by any means necessary.

Dr. Olivia Maddox wants to find out just why certain paranormals go bad. What pushes some vampires over the edge? Why do some werewolves turn so savage? If she can understand the monsters, then Olivia thinks she can help them. When she gets permission to enter Purgatory, Olivia believes she is being given the research opportunity of a lifetime.

Olivia doesn't realize that she’s walking straight into hell.

When the prisoners break loose, there is only one person—one vampire—who can protect her, but as Olivia and Shane fight the enemies that surround them, a dark and dangerous passion stirs to life between the doctor and the vamp. Shane realizes that Olivia is a woman carrying secrets—powerful, sinful secrets. Secrets that a man would kill to possess.

And Olivia realizes that—sometimes—you can’t control the beast inside of you. No matter how hard you try. Some passions can push you to the very limits of your control…and the growing lust that she feels for her vampire…it’s sending her racing right into a deadly storm of desire.

Welcome to Purgatory…a place that’s a real hell on earth…

Note MARKED BY THE VAMPIRE is a sexy paranormal romance. It contains hot scenes, an alpha vampire, and a heroine who isn't afraid to fight monsters. Word count 55,000. The first book in the Purgatory series (THE WOLF WITHIN) is also available. All of the books in the Purgatory series can be read as stand-alone titles.

I wanted to like this, I really did. But, the characters were awful. I had so many problems with each one, I kept wondering why i'm reading this if there wasn't a single character that I cared for. The premise was good, and it started out good. A prison for supernaturals, a doctor doing research, an unlikely hero and potential sizzling romance, what's not to love? right? wrong!

The heroine: She was weak, and it was by the authors design. She was weak in the sense that opportunities for her to show strength and character was just glossed over, and often times forgotten, or not addressed. I also dislike self denial immensely. It's impractical and is a waste of time. So naturally I don't like that trait in any character. And Olivia was in denial about what she was constantly.

The hero: A*****. I had no love for him. One minute he's spouting sonnets of how he would never hurt Olivia, blah blah blah, and the next he betrays her, and uses her, and/or allows others to use her. Really? This is his version of love?

The dynamic between hero and heroine: This is where the heroine's opportunities to grow never happen. Her "mate" betrays her continuously in the books, fine. If it's a part of the plot sure, it's not so bad. What bothered me was the fact that the author failed to address this stuff between the two. It's like when they have a conversation, she doesn't even bring up that he betrayed/used her. It's as if it never happened. What was there for her to love about this guy? She couldn't trust him (and believe me that was clear), and he puts others before her all the time. I just didn't get it.

Pate: A****. Yep to me, he may as well have been the villain. He claim Ethan's his friend yet he continuously put him in situations to have him betray his mate. I get that he runs a unit, and needs to think of the innocent, and play hardball. But seriously, It never occurred to him to "ask" anyone to participate in his plans? He just thought it was ok to bully them into it? Betrayal and lies left and right. And this is the guy Ethan trusts? Oh and you know what else bugged me? Ethan is supposed to be all powerful, and yet, he kept doing whatever Pate asked of him. He kept saying "my debt is paid", and the next scene is him still doing something pate asked him to do. It made no sense.

I disliked all the characters, there was nothing redeemable about any of them. So sadly, i don't think i'll continue reading the series.

Marked By The Vampire Purgatory Book 2 edition by Cynthia Eden Romance eBooks Reviews

I really liked the first book but for me, Marked by the Vampire blew it away!! To me it seemed like Shanes power and strength was down played in the first book but it worked so well, it added more to the story to learn a lot more about Shane and just how old n powerful he is. I really liked Olivia and thought the two were perfect with each other! The sex was pg13 compared to some of the other books in my library but it was still hot. I will be reading the next one right now b
I really liked the story. Couldnt put it down. I liked Shane cause hes one scary vampire. He's freaking old too. I liked Olivia at first. Then the whole self denial started and its like really? Ugh. I hate that in characters. Just deal with it because hello its right in front of her. She still denied it after that proof. I ended up not liking her character a whole lot. What I didnt understand is why the author didnt address Shane betraying Olivia all those times. You would think it would throw a kink in things as far as a relationship goes. I even get why he did what he did. She was a djinn and could kill everyone if she isnt in control of herself. They HAD to find out what she knew. Yeah maybe he could have asked her first instead of just slapping some cuffs on her and hurting her the way he did. Yeah he had a job to do but still after what they shared in the cave and everything and hell she did let him feed off her. Doesnt matter if she liked it or not. Give the lady the benefit of the doubt and give her a choice before slapping cuffs on her. If she didnt cooperate then do it. LOL. All that aside I enjoyed the book. Connors book is next and Eric after that. Now...I do NOT like Eric's methods. Yeah he is the head bastard in charge but come on. He's betraying his own people right and left. Not to mention his own sister. He's just pissing me off. I'm thinking nobody is trusting him at this point. They shouldnt though cause all he seems to think about is the mission and not his people. I know he cares about them and humans but makes you wonder if his methods shouldnt be adjusted or I dont know maybe let his most trusted people in on it. Gah. I guess we will get to know more about him in the next couple books. Dont wanna judge him too harshly because he DOES care that is obvious.
I preferred the first book. First of all, Olivia was too soft to be a psychiatrist for bad paranormals. I don't know how she made it this far. Olivia and Shane had instant attraction for each other although they met under bad circumstances - Him being a prisoner and her the doctor. I felt that Shane betrayed her trust a little too often in the beginning of the story. He wasn't really on her side when she needed him the most. Of course, she forgave him every time. He was possessive and protective towards her but he was still an agent first. In the end, they were able to solve her problem of power, which didn't come to realization until later in the book. All in all this book was okay. I will continue to read this series.
Entertaining, fun and quick paranormal romance. I did enjoy the read, especially the intriguing paranormal suspense part of the book. This author never fails to engage a reader with her suspense. But if you're looking for a book to rock your world or a romance you'll remember and re-read, then this isn't for you. Cynthia Eden is a favorite of mine and most of that is because no matter what book I pick up, I will be entertained. But sometimes the story, especially the romance part, can feel short and lacking in depth or emotion. This book was like that. I wasn't emotionally involved in the characters.

This author always has an excellent plot, but sometimes not a lot of depth. Some of her books are seriously awesome, but I do feel on others that she should spend a bit more time on quality instead of quantity. But that might just be me. But for quick mindless romantic suspense or romantic paranormal suspense, she's awesome and this was a decent read.
